RF shielding can dramatically reduce exposure from external sources like cell towers, but it's not always the right solution. Shielding is most effective when external sources dominate—if internal devices (WiFi routers, smart meters, cordless phones) are the primary concern, source elimination or distance may be more practical.
Effective shielding requires careful planning, proper material selection, correct installation technique, and thorough grounding. Poorly executed shielding can be worse than none—creating reflection issues, incomplete coverage, or even increasing exposure in some areas.
Shielding Effectiveness
Shielding effectiveness is measured in decibels (dB) of attenuation. A 10 dB reduction represents 90% power reduction, 20 dB = 99%, 30 dB = 99.9%. Most quality shielding materials achieve 30-50 dB when properly installed—but gaps, seams, and unshielded windows can dramatically reduce overall room performance.
